Crane Runway in Industrial Halls: Design, Capacities & Standards

The crane runway is one of the most demanding components of an industrial hall. Here's what you need to know about capacities, spans, and standards.

A crane runway is not just "a rail on a beam" — it's one of the most demanding technical components in an industrial hall. An incorrectly designed crane runway can destroy a hall within 10 years through dynamic material fatigue.

Here's what every investor and designer must know.

Types and capacities

LDA cranes
1-20 t
span: 10-20 m
HDR cranes
20-80 t
span: 15-30 m
Bridge cranes

span: 20-50 m

Structural calculation of crane runway — what's calculated?

A crane runway transfers dynamic loads — cranes accelerate, brake, and pick up loads. Eurocode 1-3 (EN 1991-3, EN 1993-6) defines 6 load categories for cranes:

LoadDescriptionFactor
Vertical (Q_r)Weight of crane + loadγ_f = 1.35-1.5
Lateral horizontal (H_T)Bridge brakingψ = 0.6-1.0
Longitudinal horizontal (H_L)Wheel braking0.8 × wheel force
Dynamic multiplier (φ)Impact of lifting loadsφ₁ to φ₅
FatigueCyclic loads (1M+ cycles)Category S0-S9
Most common mistake: Designing the crane runway for static mass of crane + load, without dynamic multipliers. Result: cracks in beam welds after just 5-8 years of intensive operation.

Sizing the crane runway beam

For a crane runway with a bridge crane rated 20 t, hall span 25 m, class A5:

HEB 450
Typical beam
S355 J2
Steel grade
±2mm
Rail straightness
H/600
Allowable deflection

Connection details — rail and beam

The rail is NOT welded directly to the beam — we use rail clips that allow small movements and absorb dynamic loads. Direct welding causes stress concentrations and weld cracks under fatigue.
